Many of my clients have told me that they get bogged down by general knowledge on Data Management. “Is there one thing, which I can do here and right now?” I am sharing what I told him.
I have shared one simple step in my last post (yesterday)- that is to appoint a Business Owner of Customer Data. There is one more thing which you can do- That is to issue a Data Quality Policy.
‘But we have a Quality Statement signed by our CEO and MD!’- Yes- However, the Quality statement projects the overall Quality agenda and committment to quality. Data Quality policy is a document, which states ‘on-the-ground’ management policy for Data Quality. It will have following components:
- • Business Owner Ship of Data Quality
- • Business Custodian-ship for Data Quality
- • Appointment of a Data Steward
- • Data Management Council
- • Data Quality Assurance Methods
- • Data Management Universal Standards
- • Data quality Assurance Procedures
- • Data Audit and Monitoring
- • Data Correction
- • Data Quality Measurement
- • Data Quality Awareness
The issuance of Data Quality Policy is a no-brainer, and can be done within few weeks.
While my client readily agreed, he had an apprehension-’We do not have many of the areas, as stated in the policy. How can we issue a policy, which we cannot follow?’ My strong advice was to have all the components as mentioned above (which was thankfully heeded to). I gave him many reasons on why. You can refer Data Quality Policy- Level of Coverage
Many of the areas mentioned in the policy can be done fairly quickly and for the rest, as long as one can make a start, its fine.
You can also refer Data Quality Policy to understand some more perspectives. Its part of a paid product, but the abstract itself will provide some more idea on what I am talking about.
